![]() ![]() ![]() However as days passed and a social fabric started evolving, there started setting of rules and protocols, that gradually gave rise to discipline, morality and virtues. In the ancient era when humans were primates, this last option was most prevailing option where humans struggled hard to hunt for food and even fight among themselves over the same piece of meat. ![]() Either the option is to cook it on our own or go ahead and buy it from a shop or a cafeteria.īut there is one more option which the "Ego" can identify, i.e. Now the next stage is when the food is not available readily. These two options are valid if we are in our own home, or are in a position where we can expect such facility. Other option is to search for the location of the food and get it on our own. Still the first and easiest option is identified as "Ask someone to offer the food". Unlike being helpless like a child, now we are able to get our own food. As we slowly grow and start gaining senses and ability to think and analyse, this Ego starts evaluating lots of other options for the same need, i.e. For a child that can neither ask for food, or walk towards it to grab it, is left with only one option, i.e to scream or cry to grab attention, so that the elders around can help it get the food or what it wants. Unlike the way we describe someone's undesired action as "Ego Problem", Ego has the task of identifying the various options for satisfying the need or desire. Crying of the baby, for example is the way identified by that element. It is another element that listens and acknowledges the desire generated by the Id to derive ways of satisfying it. As we grow up these desires are not just limited to necessities of life but gradually lead to generation of desire for seeking worldly pleasures regardless of those being of any necessity to lead the life. It just creates desires towards generation of a need. In the womb this Id drives it to perform various gestures like kicking to signal the mother about it's needs or it's feelings. For example a child when hungry feels the desire to cry as a tool for grabbing attention. Id generates the desire for satisfying the need or necessities. It is the manufacturing unit of what we call as "Desires". Right from the time we are born (or rather even before that) the first and foremost element that has been existing is the "Id". ![]() These three elements were defined by Sigmund Freud, the Austrian Neurologist who is also regarded as the "Father of Psychoanalysis". Not only human personality but even the personalities of other living beings are driven by three primary elements of psychology i.e. Without necessity, even a proactively defined product or service fails in the market when launched at a wrong time without anybody needing it. As it is rightly said and experienced that "Necessity is the Mother of Inventions". The needs and demands are the key factors that drive all the markets. The needs and demands drive the decisions of the marketing, sales, business and the other stakeholders to get on their feet. But she decides not to take them anyway. When we speak about introducing consumer oriented products and services, the focus is more on what the consumer needs and demands. For example, Maggie knows that even if she steals supplies from her company, no one would come to know. Ego might think of the consequences and what others might think and superego will think about whether the decision taken is morally right or not. The ego and superego might reach to the same conclusion, but they will have different reasons to reach to the conclusion. The superego- It is the formulation of morals and judgments about right and wrong. It tries to balance the demands of id that may involve delaying gratification and finding ways to reduce the tension which id might create if the desire is not met. The ego is aware of other people’s needs and desires and knows that being selfish is not good in the long run. For example, a toddler whining wanting whining continuously until he is given another serving of the dessert.Įgo- It handles the reality and tries to meet the desires of the id in a socially acceptable manner. It seeks immediate gratification towards our wants and needs. Id- It represents the very basic and most animalistic urges or desires such as desire for food and sex. Let’s look at the features of id, ego, and superego: The combination of the id, ego, and superego creates the complex behavior of human beings. These three agents describe the activities and interactions of the mental life of a person. According to Freud, in the psychic apparatus, there are three distinct interacting agents specified as the id, the ego, and the superego. The structural model of psyche was developed by Sigmund Freud. ![]()
